Data Profiling

We currently are pulling data from a few source systems and are gathering requirements for dozens of new dashboards, each from at least one (and maybe more) source systems. Each dashboard project will require data profiling, ETL, and report development work. On some projects, the ETL developer will take on the data profiling responsibilities in addition to the actually ETL work itself. This involves working with the business analyst, end-user, report developer, and maybe the technical subject matter expert. The Resource must have strong experience creating reporting tables. The reporting tables created will contain the business logic required for the reports, so that the calculations are performed during ETL. There will be reporting tables created for each dashboard project. The ETL Resource needs to have strong SQL skills in order to optimize the table builds, in addition to reviewing and optimizing the SQL code of other developers.

ETL Development

Create ETL packages and jobs to pull data from source system and also create reporting tables (such as fact and dimension). Resource must have experience with data warehousing techniques, including aggregates and slowly changing dimensions. Create new ETL jobs and tune existing ETL jobs. Review code from other data modelers and make recommendations for changes in order to improve performance. Create indexes for tables which are being pulled in as needed.

Administration

Administer ETL system by setting-up new data sources, monitor performance of ETL jobs and resolve all issues, communicate any issues to team and business users, implement practices to mitigate issues, and work with DBAs as needed to investigate any data source connection issues. Schedule ETL jobs to run at optimal times as to not interfere with live operational data, yet pull the most current data. Set-up notification emails to monitor success or failure of ETL jobs. Communicate status of ETL jobs to team and mentor other developers on how to resolve issues. Monitor ETL sequence and make changes as needed. Mid-day data refresh as needed in Development and Production environments. Coordinate Cognos read access to Data Warehouse data sources.

Monitor Growth

The data housed in our data warehouse will be growing exponentially, and in a short time frame. This Resource will be responsible for tracking the growth rate and keeping the team and management updated on any hardware changes and recommendation so that our systems can handle our growth.

Release Management

Selected Resource will learn and follow our release management process. This includes identifying the schedule in which the deployment needs to occur (standard release, non-standard release, or emergency release). The ETL Resource will be responsible for identifying the database rollback process for each database deployment.
