ODOT is looking for a System Administrator 4
Onsite interviews are REQUIRED. ONLY onsite interviews will be conducted. Local candidates are preferred.

Years of Experience:

6 plus years

Education:

4 year college degree or equivalent technical study.

The candidate will be the Third Party Technical Lead for The Ohio Department of Transportation’s SMS, TIMS and Coursemill systems as well as other systems support.

Technical Environment: Windows / VMware environment

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

  • Familiar with most basic system administrator tools and processes; for example, can boot/shutdown a machine, add and remove user accounts, use back up programs, and maintain system database files.
  • Ensure that systems are backed up as appropriate.
  • Communicate accurate and useful status updates.
  • Manage and report time spent on all work activities.
  • Experience with following quality standards.
  • Experience in maintaining operating system, system software, and keeping patches current.
  • Ability to complete minimal debugging and modification of systems.
  • Experience in executing the disaster recovery/back up procedures and archiving procedures.
  • Experience in managing security for servers.
  • Responsibility for performance tuning, capacity planning, and fault management.
  • Provide tier two support of the technical infrastructure.
  • Responsible for ensuring high priority issues are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for keeping the environment up and running.
  • Capable of writing purchase justifications.
  • Possess a Solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts.
  • Understand principles of client/server applications.
  • Management of expectations at all levels: customers/end users, executive sponsors.
  • Work with the various Infrastructure teams and operations provider to identify the strategic direction of systems management activities.
  • Understanding of the design of consistent network-wide file system layouts
  • Maintain strong relationships with employees and various tier two and three support groups.
  • Act as the first level of escalation for high priority support issues.
  • Act as the system’s management expert.
  • Recommends policies on system use and services.
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills; both written and spoken

The ideal candidate would have the technical qualifications specified below:

  • Windows Server Administration
    • Candidate will be expected to be familiar with Windows server OS as it will be the underlying operating system for supported products. Including (but not limited to) configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and security.
  • Server virtualization
    • Candidiate will be expected to be familiar with virtualization concepts (specifically VMware) as most of ODOT’s environment is virtualized.
  • PowerShell scripting / Windows batch scripting / Windows scheduled task management
    • Candidate will be expected to be familiar with various scripting and scheduling techniques that can be used to implement and maintain the supported systems.
  • Secure implementation concepts
    • Candidate will be expected to be familiar with implementing systems in a secure manner. Including (but not limited to) authentication, transmission of data, system hardening.
  • Troubleshooting complex technical issues between various disciplines including, but not limited to:
    • Windows Operating Systems
    • Active Directory
    • IIS
    • Tomcat
    • DNS / DHCP and Network communication basics
    • Database drivers & connectivity
    • Certificate services
    • Firewall & DMZ concepts
    • Load-balancers / load-balancing concepts
  • Preferred/but Not Required
    • Experience in ArcGIS 10.2
    • Experience in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services

Day-to-Day Responsibilities would include:

  • Primary technical decision point for implementing Third Party (Off-the-Shelf) Software solutions
    • Exmples include Bentley’s Structures Management System (SMS), Trivantis’ CourseMill Learning Management System, Microsoft Team Foundation Server
    • Analyze, determine, and document technical decisions and architecture required to implement systems in ODOT’s environment.
  • Ensure consistency among environments (e.g. testing, training, production), ensure best practices and adherence to ODOT IT policy and procedure.
  • Manage the daily operations of the systems management team to ensure service levels are being met.
  • Technical product expert:
    • Provide ongoing support including updates & patches, troubleshooting, install & config
    • Act as Technical liaison between vendor, business, and ODOT IT groups
  • Manage the system management resources.
  • Responsible for documenting all technical aspects and decisions of implemented system including (but not limited to) process and procedures for support and update. Responsible for ongoing maintenance of technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with business owners and IT Management to organize and release updates & patches.
  • Coordinate efforts with vendors if tier three support is required.
  • Identify and track issues, risks, and action items.
  • Review, prioritize, and research service requests.
  • Identify, approve and prioritize team projects.
  • Manage systems that may include multiple environments, multiple tiers, multiple servers, and hundreds to thousands of users.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time with a positive attitude.
  • The position will go through the end of fiscal, with the possibility of being extended into next fiscal
